The following post is a guest contribution from Dave Pardo, social media manager with Coldwell Banker The Real Estate Group.

CES 2018 gave me a new perspective to smart home technology – even beyond the convenience aspect. After visiting the Kwikset booth, I now know how smart locks can ‘open doors’ to the smart home lifestyle for homeowners.

Aside the many locks that Kwikset showcased, there were two that stood out for me… the Kwikset Kevo Touch-to-Open Smart Lock and the Kwikset Obsidian Touchscreen Electronic Deadbolt.

Kwikset Kevo Touch-to-Open Smart Lock

Before watching this lock in action, I wondered ‘how innovative can a simple-looking lock can be?’… I had no idea. Picture yourself walking up to your front door, hands full (about 99% of the time for me), and then needing to find which pocket you put your keys into. Phew… I’m exhausted just thinking about this scene. Well, you can forget about fumbling for your keys, because all the homeowner needs to do is touch the lock for the deadbolt to retract and unlock the deadbolt. Because it works off Bluetooth technology, it knows when you and your smart phone are at your door, to activate once it’s touched. You can’t get any more simplistic than that. Now if only I had this lock on my high school locker… I would have seen less detention slips. Anyways…

After first looking at this lock and wondering ‘how can a black square boxy thing be a lock?’, I learned that this slick modern-looking touch combination keypad has a lot of smarts to it. You simply touch two numbers that are displayed on the keypad before entering your secret passcode to unlock the door. Why must you press the two numbers first, you ask? It’s so that you purposely and eventually spread finger smudges all over the keypad so that visitors cannot detect specific smudges, to find out which numbers are constantly pressed, to figure out your secret passcode. That’s smart, huh?

There you have it… the Kwikset Kevo Touch-to-Open Smart Lock and the Kwikset Obsidian Touchscreen Electronic Deadbolt… two smart home products that can give you the edge when your home is on the market. Because it’s proven, with smart home products installed, homes typically sell faster.
